LEAKING HOT WATER SYSTEM? LEARN WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR SYSTEM SPRINGS A LEAK!

Broken Hot Water System

Has it been about 8-12 years? Suss on your hot water system? There is probably a reason. When it comes to hot water systems (even if you look after them really well) they always eventually break down. As this process starts to happen you can experience leaks.

Leaks
Whilst eventually your system will need to be replaced, a leak isn’t the end of the road. There are a few things you can do before you reach out for a plumber. If you find a leak in your hot water system, follow these steps.

Turn it off
Flick the switch on your switchboard titled ‘Water Heater’ and turn off the power. If you are on gas hot water locate the thermostat and turn the knob to the ‘off’ (or pilot) position. Once you have turned off the fuel, its time to cut the water.

Cut it off
Feel around your tank, somewhere on it you should be able to locate a valve (on a line). Turn this off tight to the right to cut the water.

Drain it
If your system is located outside your home, you may like to drain it into the surrounding garden (keeping in mind the volume of water that will be released). Alternatively, you can locate the drain valve (located at the bottom of the system) and attach a hose to it and run the hose to a drain before you open the valve. If you find the flow of water is slow, simply turn on any hot water tap in the house to break the vacuum.

Now that your system is disconnected, drained and no longer leaking all over your floor, call OTC Plumbing and gas to come to patch up the leak. We can assess the damage and let you know if it is something we can repair and/or how much it will cost to replace it.
